The World's Biggest Problems

Last week our class came up with a list of the world's biggest problems.

  • global warming

  • the economic slow down

  • using up limited resources

  • providing enough energy for the future

  • war

We also agreed that the solutions to all of these problems involved math in some way. There was an assignment to write down some of the ways that math could help in the solution of these problems. It was just before the end of the term and only a few students actually turned in the assignment. I'd like to get every one's input on this so I am reassigning it.

The goal of math is problem solving, so I really want you to think about this. The solutions to the world's problems are your futures.

Please leave a comment. If you already handed in a written version your comment could be that you did give me a written response. Of course, there is always room for more thought.

  2. These issues are a huge problem in our society. And we need to do as much as we can to make them less of a problem.

  3. These problems are a huge issue and they need to be solved! It is very important that they are fixed, but it will be very difficult! Math is deffinately involved in finding the solution to these problems.

  4. These are very bad problems and they really need to be solved. Hopefully the new president will contribute to the well being to the future of our excistence.

  5. well lets just hope Obama can show us what he can do if not I don't see another way to solve them

  6. These are very bad prolems that need to be solved. I believe that over the next few years with a great leader who has brought hope to many, our generation and generations after us will come out with their solutions. With this our economy could come back the the recession and we will be a leading country in the world once again.

  7. These Issues Are A Huge Part Of Our Enconomy Society That Needs To Be Solved! Hopefully With The New President Obama, He'll
Change How Are Society Works And Make A
    Difference In Someone's Life.

  8. i think that these issues are very important, and hopefully, we can fix them in the very near future. :)

  9. I agree with everything that has been said above. These are severe, intricate, and demanding problems. The only way we are going to dig our selves out of the hole called Bush is to work together and actually do something. The congress and Bush have been using dull shovels to try to get us out of the war and all of these problems but you just can't get out of a hole with out some darn good tools. Obama will hopefully be the drills and tools that we need to set this county moving forward.
    GO OBAMA!!!

  10. These problems all have data associated with them. There are statistics that prove that Global Warming is real, that indicate the economy is shrinking, that there is a limited amount of oil on earth etc.

  12. So far the comments are good in that people are hopeful that a new president can help set the tone so that people are encouraged to try to solce these problems. But no-one has started to think about the process of solving these problems, what type of thinking is needed.

  13. math is very important; so math is probably the solution.

  14. In life math is very important. This is because we use math everyday and we need to know all the equations in order to solve things in life.such as counting money to spend, cooking, esitmations, discounts, etc. So in math calss you should take advantage of what you learn because later in life you need to know these things.

  15. These are big problems in our life time. in my oppinion i dont thing math can solve eveything. Many but not all of these problems can be solved using math. Like the economy has to do with money and money is math. But some examples of the things that cant use math is global warming and war!! in war we are juat fighting to see who is stronger. There is no mathematical equation for fighting! many things can happen that will cahnge your "equation". But there is also other things that you can use math in.

  16. These are serious problems and flaws! Our society should pull together to solve theses problem before it is to late, hopefully Obama can help us pull together. I think al theses problems involve math solutions, including war.

  17. Like most people we are trying to be rid of these problems and more. So, if we work hard and use the many methods of mathwe have, we may be able to save our Planet. And the Universe.

  18. I already turned in a written response, but I agree with everybody that all of these problems need to be solved soon. I know that all of them can be solved somehow with math.

  19. These are verry big and important problems that need to be solved. I think that if enough intelligent people get together we can solve them(mabey even by using MATH! )But I think they will take a while to fix.I dont think Obama, or anyone, will be able to fix them over night.((I also think that there are many other problems that need to be solved, and might even be able to be solved using certain equations!))

  20. Well fortunatly we have a new leader who has the potential to fix these major problems of which need fixing. I math can be related to the problem the pherhaps it could be part of the solution however it may not be the solution

  21. Math is very important and it can be used to solve many problems such as the ones listed above. We have a new leader and hopefully he will work to solve these problems. I'm sure there will be lots of math involved in these solutions. These problems need to be solved soon and I hope Obama will help lead us to the solutions.

  22. well the global warming could really effect the world alot....and same with the other problems so i think the world should do something to help out on some of these problems so it wont get wores

    ReplyDelete
  23. global warming will always be a problem you cant just simply make it disappear. it wouldnt be a danger in our generation but a couple generations later. people shouldnt be wasteful and litter. many people dont care about the economy but once something hits you hard, you cant change it. when something in history happens it stays that way forever.
our economy has gotten to a huge problem to many families. A large amount of employees lost their job. When people lose their jobs they spend on only what they need. if they consume less businesses start to shut down since they wouldnt make enough money. that leads to thousands more losing their jobs.
if scientist, mathematicians, or whatnot finds out a way to even out the cycle again. in order to do that the U.S. needs to export more and import less.
    -That's just what i think

  24. This are serious problems that need to be fixed soon or else our earth will become of no use to humans and will have no resources that we can use. We need to work out these problems using math, science, or whatever we can use to solve these very bad problems

  25. um.. I was going to say all of that. but great minds think alike! I think Obama can lead us to a solution for these big issues. But we can't just rely on obama to fix everything. i think we can use math because math is problem solving and not just old equations. Im trying to make this sound like it hasn't been said, but unfortunately it has. Go math thinkers.

  26. I think that Obmam will help with most of these problems and the rest of the world would have to help us to

  27. All of these problems have mathematical solutions. But someone has to step up and find them.

  28. global warmaning- the problem we have with global wamaning is this our earth is getting too hot! if we just put all our money into the cooling of the earth it could probably stop the warmaning... gigantarc fans placed in the right spots around the earth will cool us all down and save our planet. (money is math)

economic slow down: tell everyone to spend alot of money and make alot of money at the same time. this way we speed everything up so its so quick and it won't be a slow down any longer.(money is math)

using up limited resources: well if you DIVIDE the amount we use now and MULTIPLY the resources then we have plenty of resources to go around to everybody!!!!

providing energy for future: if we collect enough money we could probably build a mathematical energy capsules to hold energy for future uses...(money is math)

WAR: war is bad and super super violent! this violence should STOP! AND I MEAN NOW! to stop this problem using math we should MINUS all of the wars and ADD LOVE and peace... so peace out until next time BRA!!!!!

  29. I agree with what victoria says.
we have issues that need to be fixed .
If we put our brains together and use the power of mathematical bombs we can save the WORLD.
And i think we need to get all the spies out of our school system...bad.

    GO OBAMA!!!

  30. you have to use math 2 help solve all the world's problems....hopefully obama might help change problems.

  31. Math can help us calculate how money should be spent to fix our ecconimy, and how we can use math to make sustainable energy resorces, as well as how to save the resorces we are running out of. We calculate tactics to win wars and also to provide cleaner ways of doing everything.
That is how we can solve these problems with math.

  32. Im late to post this, but its true that math is the solution for our problems if it is applied right...but we never want to over-do it. After all, to much math, statistics, and money in wall street is what got us into this ecinomic mess in the first place.

  34. I think we are on our way to solving many of our economys problems because of our new president Obama. I think having him as our president is a great start but i still think part of the responsibility for fixing these problems is on us as citizens. If we can create peace here in our own country maybe it will carry over to other countries. I also think that if we create clean energy industries that will create new jobs for people which will help stimulate our economy as well as creating clean energgy that will help power our country and eventually the world with clean efficient energy.

  35. I also believe that these problems need to be tended to right away. With help from Obama I think our country will soon be on the right path with green energy.

To Understand What He Wanted To Tell Us.What Really Caught My Attention Was That You Can Make "Black Forest Cuckoo Clock" Out Of 1 Sheet Of Paper&With No Cuts,Just Folds. Also People Use Mathematical Principles To This. Origami Has To Obey 4 Simple Laws; 2 Colorability, Mountain-Valley Counting, Angles Around A Vertex&Layer Ordering.

  37. i think if people learn how to save and also pay their loans i think the world will get better and the economy will go up. i also think that people should't litter and they should go green, so that the global warming will go down.
